LaMontagne Gallery is pleased to present the work of Jeff Perrott:
With “Construction,” his 4th solo show at LaMontagne Gallery, Jeff Perrott continues the process-based interplay of chance and intention, extending the investigation into hard-edged geometric space. The 11 paintings on view recruit Perrott’s familiar chance-based random walk process to connect isometric rectilinear planes into tangled, uncanny, unsettling structural forms.
These quasi-architectural images collapse flatness and interior space, sequence and simultaneity, and volume and plane into a visual experience that continually shifts among representational and abstract views, destabilizing that experience, location, and place.
In Construction, the lyrical, baroque undulation of Perrott’s Random Walk series is transformed into a strict geometry informed by constructivist history generally, and the isometric geometry of El Lissitsky’s Proun works in particular.
“Lissitsky theorized the use of axonometric geometry as the construction of alternative social space,” notes Perrott. “By combining this geometric trope with chance and particular color spaces, I want to push standard painting space - notions of interior versus object space and representation and abstraction - into the kind of integrated experience encountered in, for example, Chinese landscape painting, where simultaneous and sequential space and time merge in an integrated experience.” The result is an uncanny and engaging sense of the convergence of familiar and unfamiliar space, history and future, current and possible worlds.
