Snail Drawings
Daniel Ranalli January 18th - February 22nd 2025
LaMontagne Gallery is pleased to present Snail Drawings, Daniel Ranalli’s second solo exhibition with the gallery. This body of work, nearly three decades in the making, depicts interaction between human intervention and nature’s unpredictability. Featuring photographic diptychs of snail trails on the beaches of Cape Cod, Ranalli documents both the arranged starting points and the organic, unplanned movements that follow, transforming patterns into unexpected visual compositions.
Collaboration with the natural world is central to Ranalli’s practice. The snails, the sand, and the tides are as much a part of the creative process as the artist’s hands, reflecting his engagement with chance, order, and impermanence. This focus on environmental interaction has defined his broader career, from Zen Gardens erased by the elements to sculptural installations washed away by the tide. Ranalli’s work is included in over two dozen major museum collections, such as the MFA Boston, Minneapolis Institute of Arts, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Smithsonian National Gallery of Art.
